Gamify Duke’s architectural details in order to educate visitors and students about the campus history in an engaging and entertaining way.
Academic Crests is an augmented reality (AR) Snapchat filter designed to bring Duke University’s historic campus architecture to life. Using custom landmarkers in Lens Studio, the project detects the intricate academic crests carved into Duke’s buildings and overlays interactive digital content to tell their story.
Concept
Before campus signage existed, these stone crests served as visual identifiers, signaling a building’s original academic purpose — such as Law, Languages, or Biological Sciences. This project gamifies that history for a younger audience, particularly middle school visitors, making it both educational and engaging.
When a user points their phone at a crest, a 3D mini-map appears, revealing where the building is located and prompting the user to guess its original academic focus. Players can then compare the building’s historical use with its modern-day purpose, deepening their connection to the campus.
Development
Impact
The experience turns Duke’s architecture into an interactive scavenger hunt, combining history, design, and technology to make campus exploration more playful and memorable.
